Before you go

Practical checks for studying, working or traveling abroad, from the documents you need to your first day on arrival.

Documents

Most delays start with paperwork. Check it twice before anything else.

  • Check your passport's validity first

Many countries require six months of validity beyond your departure date and two blank pages. Renew early, since processing times vary.

  • Keep copies in two places

Store scans of your passport, visa, admission or job letter and insurance in cloud storage, and carry one printed set separately from the originals.

  • Match names exactly

The name on your ticket, visa and booking must match your passport character for character. Small differences can mean a denied boarding.

  • Carry proof of purpose

Border officers may ask why you're visiting. Keep your acceptance letter, contract or itinerary easy to reach in your hand luggage.

Money

Plan how you'll pay for the first weeks before your first salary or stipend arrives.

  • Tell your bank before you leave

Unannounced foreign card use can trigger a block. Confirm your card works abroad and note its fees for withdrawals and payments.

  • Bring two ways to pay

Carry a debit card, a backup card kept separately, and a small amount of local currency for transport from the airport.

  • Budget for the first month

Deposits, transport passes and a SIM card add up quickly. Set aside enough to cover rent and daily costs until your first payment lands.

Safety

A few minutes of preparation makes it much easier to get help if you need it.

  • Save your embassy's contacts

Note the address and emergency number of your country's embassy in your destination. It's the first call if you lose your passport.

  • Get insurance that fits the trip

Check that medical cover meets the visa requirement and includes the activities you plan, such as work placements or sport.

  • Share your itinerary

Send your flight details and first address to someone at home, and agree when you'll check in after landing.

Packing

Pack for the first two weeks, not the whole stay. You can buy the rest there.

  • Documents and medicine go in your carry-on

Keep originals, prescriptions and a few days of medication with you in case your checked bag is delayed.

  • Check the plug and the weather

Bring one adapter for the local socket type, and look at the season you'll arrive in, not the one you're leaving.

  • Weigh your bags at home

Airline limits differ by fare. Weighing before you leave avoids paying excess baggage at the counter.

Arrival

The first 48 hours set the tone. Know exactly how you'll get from the airport to your bed.

  • Plan the airport transfer

Look up the train, bus or official taxi rank before you fly, and save the route offline in case you have no data on landing.

  • Register if your visa requires it

Some countries require you to register your address or collect a residence card within days of arrival. Put the deadline in your calendar.

  • Get a local number early

A local SIM or eSIM makes it easier to open a bank account, receive codes and be reached by your school or employer.
